Instagram is stepping up its teen safety game. Starting this week, users under 18 will see stricter limits on what they can follow, search for, and interact with—think PG-13 movie style. This builds on Meta’s “Teen Accounts,” launched last year to protect young users from harmful or age-inappropriate content.
What’s Changing
Posts with strong language, risky stunts, or drug-related content won’t be promoted to teens and may even be hidden. Teens following accounts that regularly post age-inappropriate material will no longer see or interact with them. Search terms like “alcohol” or “gore” will also be blocked. Even Meta’s AI chatbot is getting a PG-13 makeover, avoiding responses that feel out of place for younger users.
Why It Matters
Meta says the changes respond to parents asking for clearer boundaries and more control. “Teens may occasionally see suggestive content or hear strong language—like a PG-13 movie—but we’ll make those moments rare,” Meta said. Parents can link their accounts to teens’ profiles for even stricter “Limited Content” settings, controlling comments, posts, and AI interactions.
Background and Global Context
The update comes amid growing scrutiny of teen safety on social media. Studies show many teens still encounter unsafe content despite previous protections. Other countries, like Denmark, are even moving to restrict social media access for under-15s. Meta hopes the new rules strike a balance between protection and the teen experience.
Rollout
The new settings start this week in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, with global rollout following in the coming months. Teens linked to parents’ accounts can switch to previous settings with permission, while AI tools will help identify underage users attempting to bypass restrictions.
