Stroke Led to Coma and Heart Failure
The Vatican released his death certificate, stating the pope died of a stroke that caused coma and irreversible heart failure. It also revealed that Francis had Type 2 diabetes, a condition not previously made public.
He passed away at 7:35 a.m. at his residence in Santa Marta, weeks after being discharged from the hospital where he had been treated for pneumonia.
Crowds Mourn Outside St. Peter’s Basilica
Despite his visible exhaustion during Easter, the pope maintained a full schedule. The news of his death drew emotional crowds to the Vatican, with many mourners gathering outside in silence and prayer.
Final Wishes: A Simple Tomb and a Latin Inscription
Pope Francis had already prepared his will, asking for a modest burial at Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica in Rome. He requested no grand tomb—just a simple stone engraved with "Franciscus."
His body was placed in a wooden and zinc coffin at the Santa Marta chapel and is expected to lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica starting Wednesday.
Funeral and Papal Succession Plans Underway
Cardinals will begin meetings on Tuesday to plan the funeral, which must take place within four to six days—likely between Friday and Sunday.
They will also start preparations for the conclave, the closed-door gathering where cardinals under age 80 will vote to elect the next pope within the next three weeks.
As tributes pour in, Francis is remembered for his efforts to reform the church, his progressive approach to faith, and his deep focus on service and humility.
