Angelina Jolie made a quiet but powerful visit to the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing this week, meeting humanitarian workers and displaced Palestinians as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues.
The Oscar-winning actor was accompanied by a US delegation and spent time speaking with volunteers, medical teams, and aid drivers working on the frontlines.
Meeting Aid Workers and Volunteers
At the Rafah crossing, Jolie met with members of the Egyptian Red Crescent and truck drivers responsible for delivering humanitarian aid toward Gaza. She thanked volunteers for their work and said she felt “honored” to meet those supporting civilians in extreme conditions.
The visit highlighted the role of aid workers as access into Gaza remains limited.
Visiting Injured Palestinians in Egypt
Jolie also traveled to the nearby city of Arish, where she spoke with Palestinians who had been evacuated to Egypt for medical treatment. Reports say she visited patients in hospital wards, listening to their stories and checking on their care.
The focus of the visit was to better understand both medical needs and the status of aid deliveries into Gaza.
Rafah Crossing Remains Closed
The Rafah border crossing was expected to reopen following a ceasefire in Gaza, but it remains closed. Egypt and several other countries, including Saudi Arabia, have urged the international community to push for the immediate entry of essential aid supplies.
Israel has stated it will only allow Palestinians to exit Gaza, not enter, until remaining hostages are returned. Egypt has repeatedly said it does not support the permanent relocation of Palestinians into its territory.
Jolie’s Longstanding Humanitarian Role
Jolie stepped down as a special envoy for the UN refugee agency in 2022 after more than two decades of service. Since then, she has continued humanitarian visits independently, including trips to Yemen and Ukraine.
Her visit to Rafah reinforces her ongoing involvement in global humanitarian issues, even outside her former UN role.
