Alex Eala's Doha Setback Impacts WTA Rankings Outlook

Alex Eala’s promising Middle East swing hit a setback after an opening-round defeat at the Qatar Open, a result set to impact her WTA Rankings despite recent career-best progress.

The Filipina entered the WTA 1000 event in Doha with confidence following an impressive quarter-final run at last week’s Abu Dhabi Open, where she reached the last eight of the WTA 500 tournament. However, Eala was unable to carry that momentum into Qatar, falling to Czech teenager Tereza Valentova in straight sets.

Valentova, who had previously defeated Eala at the Japan Open in Osaka last October, repeated the feat in Doha. After edging a tight first set, the 18-year-old pulled away for a 7-6(6), 6-1 victory, ending Eala’s campaign at the opening hurdle.

The defeat brings an abrupt end to Eala’s Qatar Open run and is expected to affect her standings in the WTA Rankings. While she climbed five places this week to a new career-high of world No. 40, the early loss means she is already projected to slide in the next update.

In the WTA Live Rankings, Eala has dropped three places to world No. 43, with further movement possible as the tournament progresses. Valentova is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the result, provisionally jumping eight places to a new career-high of world No. 40 after her win over the Filipina.

Other players also moved ahead of Eala in Doha. Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska climbed to world No. 41 in the live standings following a three-set victory over Cristina Bucsa, while Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko edged past Eala after winning her opening match and defending finalist points at the Qatar Open.

Despite the ranking implications, Eala will take positives from her recent form. Her Abu Dhabi performance highlighted her growing consistency at the WTA level, even if the Doha setback temporarily stalls her upward trajectory.

In terms of earnings, Eala will collect $18,300 in prize money for her first-round appearance in Doha and 10 WTA ranking points. With the Qatar Open concluding later this week, further shifts in the live rankings could still see her drop additional places before next Monday’s official update.
