Trump Delays China Tariff Hike for 90 More Days

U.S. President Donald Trump has given the U.S.-China trade talks a fresh 90-day lifeline, signing an executive order just hours before steep tariffs were set to return. Without it, American duties on Chinese goods would have jumped to 145%, with China ready to slap a 125% rate on U.S. products—a level that would have nearly frozen trade between the two countries.

Why It Matters

The original tariff pause began in May after talks in Geneva, giving both sides time to negotiate. That window was set to close Tuesday at 00:01 ET. Now, with the extension, the U.S. will keep its current 30% tariffs on Chinese imports, while China maintains its 10% rate on American goods.

Behind the Decision

Trump has kept talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping cordial, hinting at “nice” progress but avoiding big promises. Trade insiders say this delay is classic Trump—drawing negotiations out to the final moments for leverage. Former officials expect the extra time will be used to hammer out bigger trade agreements, possibly including investments, export rules, and agricultural deals.

What’s Next

The fall could bring a larger framework agreement, but for now, the move mostly buys breathing room. Analysts note it also reduces market jitters and gives both countries space to work through deeper issues, from soybean purchases to energy imports.
