A 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit La Union Thursday morning, felt as far as Baguio City.

La Union Hit by Magnitude 4.8 Quake, Baguio City Shakes at Intensity V

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake jolted La Union on Thursday morning, causing local officials to call off classes and government work for the day.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the quake struck around 10:30 a.m., with its epicenter located about 2 kilometers northeast of Pugo, La Union. The tremor was shallow, with a depth of only 10 kilometers — enough to make it strongly felt in nearby areas.

Strong Tremors Felt in Baguio

Residents in Baguio City reported Intensity V shaking, sending employees and students rushing outdoors. The Baguio City government also suspended elementary and high school classes for safety.

Phivolcs recorded weaker intensities in surrounding areas: Intensity III in parts of La Union, Pangasinan, and Mountain Province; Intensity II in San Fernando and Nueva Ecija; and Intensity I in Lingayen and Urdaneta.


 

Quick Response from Local Officials

The local government of Pugo acted fast, announcing through Facebook that work and classes in all levels were suspended “for everyone’s safety.”

The quake comes just 10 days after a deadly tremor in Central Philippines that left over 70 people dead, putting residents on edge over aftershocks and future quakes.
