Israel Launches Air Strikes on Five Towns in Southern Lebanon

Israel launched air strikes on five towns in southern Lebanon on Thursday, sending residents rushing onto crowded roads to escape. One strike hit Mais Al Jabal, a border town still recovering from last year’s clashes with Hezbollah. Lebanon’s Health Ministry confirmed one person was injured.

Which Towns Were Hit?

Apart from Mais Al Jabal, strikes also landed in Debbin, Burj Qalawiya, Al Shahabiya, and Kfar Tibnit. Israel said the targets were weapons depots linked to Hezbollah’s elite Radwan force.

Ceasefire? What Ceasefire?

The attacks come despite a truce signed in November that was supposed to end more than a year of fighting. Since then, Israel has kept troops stationed in southern Lebanon, insisting the sites are “strategic.”

Lebanon Pushes Back

President Joseph Aoun condemned the strikes, calling out not just Israel but also the “silence” of countries that backed the ceasefire. “The time has come to put an immediate end to these blatant violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty,” he said. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam also urged international players to put “maximum pressure” on Israel to stop.

Tensions Around Hezbollah

The strikes landed just one day after Hezbollah marked a year since Israel blew up the group’s pagers and radios, an attack that killed dozens and wounded thousands. Beirut, under US pressure, has tasked the Lebanese army with disarming Hezbollah near the Israeli border by year’s end. But with Thursday’s strikes, the army warned that Israel’s repeated attacks could derail that plan.

Hezbollah’s Response

Hezbollah MP Hassan Fadlallah brushed off the strikes, vowing that southern villagers “will not surrender or abandon their land” despite the renewed aggression.
