The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) in Qatar has officially announced the vaccination requirements for the upcoming Hajj 1447H/2026 season, emphasizing a robust strategy to safeguard the health of pilgrims traveling to the Holy Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah.
Released on April 22, 2026, the guidelines aim to minimize the risks of infectious diseases in the crowded environment of the pilgrimage while ensuring a safe spiritual experience.
The cornerstone of the mandatory requirement is the quadrivalent meningococcal (ACYW-135) vaccine, which all pilgrims must receive regardless of age or health status. This measure is critical given the high risk of transmission in densely populated gathering spots.
In addition to the meningococcal mandate, the Ministry has made the COVID-19 vaccine compulsory for specific high-risk groups. This includes:
- Pilgrims aged 65 and older.
- Pregnant women.
- Individuals with chronic conditions, such as heart or respiratory diseases, chronic kidney failure, hereditary blood disorders (like sickle cell anemia and thalassaemia), congenital or acquired immunodeficiencies (including those on immunosuppressive medications or with cancer), and chronic neurological diseases.
While mandatory for high-risk groups, the Ministry strongly recommends the COVID-19 vaccine for all individuals aged 18 and older. Furthermore, all pilgrims are advised to receive the seasonal influenza vaccine to further reduce respiratory risks.
Optional Vaccinations for Enhanced Protection
To provide extra layers of protection for the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, the MoPH offers optional vaccines:
- Pneumococcal Vaccine: Recommended for individuals aged 65 and over, as well as those aged 18 to 64 with chronic diseases or risk factors such as diabetes, kidney failure, immunodeficiency, splenectomy, chronic respiratory or cardiovascular diseases, and smokers.
- Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Vaccine: Recommended specifically for individuals aged 60 and older.
Timing and Logistics
The Ministry stresses the importance of timing, urging all pilgrims to obtain their required vaccinations at least 10 days before traveling to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. All necessary vaccines are available at primary healthcare centers across Qatar.
Pilgrims with chronic diseases are advised to consult their doctors well in advance of their trip to ensure they have sufficient medication for the duration of their stay.
The MoPH, in collaboration with the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs and the Qatar Red Crescent, has also published a comprehensive Pilgrim's Health Guide. This resource, available on the MoPH website, covers essential preventive measures and educational guidelines for before, during, and after the rituals.
These measures align with Qatar's National Health Strategy 2024–2030, which prioritizes proactive disease prevention. By ensuring high vaccination uptake, the Ministry aims to reduce the disease burden and protect the wellbeing of Qatari citizens participating in one of the world's largest religious gatherings.
