Set your alarms, skywatchers — the universe is serving smiles this April.

On the morning of Friday, April 25, 2025, early risers around the globe will be treated to a rare astronomical treat as Venus, Saturn, and a thin crescent Moon align in a formation that looks like a glowing smiley face. It’s called a triple conjunction, and it’s as cute as it is cosmic.

Best seen around 5:30 a.m. local time, this celestial lineup will light up the eastern horizon just before sunrise. Venus will take the top spot as the brightest of the bunch, Saturn will sit slightly lower, and the crescent moon will curve just beneath them — creating a triangular setup that resembles a smiling emoji in the sky.

NASA Solar System Ambassador Brenda Culbertson described it best: “Venus is higher above the eastern horizon with Saturn lower, and a thin, crescent Moon a bit lower and a little farther north. The thin, crescent Moon looks like a smile.”

You’ll be able to spot Venus and Saturn with the naked eye, but if you’ve got binoculars or a telescope handy, now’s the time to use them. You might even catch a glimpse of Mercury low on the horizon below the main trio — but it’ll be a tough one to spot unless skies are super clear.

Bonus: the smiley face sky moment is happening just days after the Lyrid meteor shower peaks, so the universe is clearly showing off this week.

Whether you're into space, astrology, or just need a reason to wake up early and feel small in the best way — this is your sign (literally). So grab a cozy hoodie, head outside, and don’t forget to make a wish on the sky’s smile.
