Egyptian actor and singer Mohammed Ramadan is scheduled to appear in court on June 3 over accusations that he insulted the Egyptian flag and misrepresented the country while performing at the Coachella music festival in the US.

The case was filed by a lawyer who claims Ramadan's stage outfit—described by critics as similar to a belly dancer’s costume—disrespected national values and gave a wrong image of Egyptian culture abroad.

$1 Billion Compensation Demanded

The lawsuit also demands that Ramadan pay $1 billion in damages to the Tahiya Masr Fund, a state-backed initiative that supports development efforts in Egypt. The plaintiff says the outfit offended Egyptians and harmed the country's image.

Ramadan wore the controversial attire during his historic Coachella performance, where he became the first Egyptian to perform on that global stage. Online reactions were swift, with some praising the achievement but many criticizing his choice of clothes, calling it unmanly and culturally inappropriate.

Ramadan Defends Designer and Concept

In response, Ramadan defended the outfit in a Facebook post, saying it was created by Egyptian designer Farida Temraz and inspired by ancient Pharaoh statues. The post was later deleted, according to local media.

Not His First Legal Trouble

This isn’t the first time Ramadan has made headlines for controversy. In 2020, he was sentenced to one year in prison after being found guilty of defaming a pilot. The incident involved a viral video of Ramadan sitting in the cockpit of a plane, pretending to fly it—an act that reportedly led to the pilot losing his job.

He also faced backlash last year after allegedly mocking former Egyptian president Anwar Al Sadat in one of his music videos, drawing criticism from the late leader’s family.

A Career Full of Fame and Drama

Despite the controversies, Ramadan remains one of Egypt’s biggest entertainers. Known for action-packed films, TV dramas, and his music career, he has a large fanbase across the Arab world. However, his growing list of legal and public image challenges continues to follow his rise to fame.
