Qatar’s sporting history reached new depths this September as Maha Al-Kuwari became the nation’s first female freediving record holder.

Competing at the CMAS World Depth Championship in Greece, Al-Kuwari not only broke barriers but also secured two national records in the process.

Al-Kuwari achieved a depth of -41 meters in Free Immersion (FIM) and -39 meters in Constant Weight (CWT), making her the first Qatari woman to compete – and succeed – on such a prestigious stage.

Her achievement reflects years of dedication, discipline, and determination. Training opportunities for freediving in Qatar are limited, yet Al-Kuwari overcame these challenges with relentless preparation and the encouragement of her support network.

Freediving, often described as a sport of balance between body and mind, holds a deeper meaning for Al-Kuwari. To her, it is a sanctuary – where silence teaches strength, pressure creates peace, and challenges become power.

Beyond personal victory, Al-Kuwari’s success marks a milestone for Qatar. Her performance not only raises the profile of the sport but also paves the way for future generations of female athletes across the country.

With this historic achievement, Maha Al-Kuwari has cemented her place as a trailblazer in Qatari sport and an inspiration for aspiring divers and athletes alike.
