A ferry trip to Bali turned tragic late Wednesday night when a passenger vessel sank in the Bali Strait, leaving at least 61 people missing. The accident happened just 25 minutes after the ferry left port, according to Indonesia's Surabaya search and rescue team.

What Happened?

The ferry, KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, departed from Banyuwangi in East Java headed for northern Bali. Not long after setting sail, the vessel went down for reasons still unknown.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene with inflatable boats and larger rescue ships from Surabaya, managing to save four people in the early hours of Thursday. These survivors reportedly escaped using the ferry’s lifeboat.

How Many Were Onboard?

Based on the ferry’s manifest, there were 53 passengers and 12 crew members, plus 22 vehicles including 14 trucks. However, as often happens in Indonesia, the real number of people on board might be higher than what was officially recorded.

No reports yet confirm whether any foreigners were among the passengers.

Marine Accidents Happen Often in Indonesia

Sadly, boat accidents aren’t new in Indonesia, where ferries are a common way to travel between the country’s 17,000+ islands. Weak safety rules and unpredictable weather have caused several deadly sinkings over the years.

In fact, just this March, another boat capsized off Bali, killing an Australian tourist.
