Israel has placed two volunteers from Freedom Flotilla's Madleen in solitary confinement after they refused to sign deportation papers.
The two volunteers are Brazilian volunteer Thiago Ávila and French-Palestinian European Parliament member Rima Hassan. They were transferred to separate prison facilities, away from the other volunteers who are still in Israeli detention.
Ávila was placed in isolation in Ayalon Prison because of his ongoing hunger and thirst strike, which he began two days ago, according to the Israeli rights organization and legal center Adalah.
Hassan was placed in Neve Tirza Prison under inhumane conditions after writing 'Free Palestine' on a wall in Givon Prison. She also began a hunger strike in protest of the transfer.
According to the statement by Adalah, "She was moved to a small, windowless cell with extremely poor hygienic conditions and has been denied access to the prison yard.”
Adalah has condemned the transfer of the two volunteers to separate prison facilities because it is "a serious violation of the volunteers’ rights and a clear attempt to exert mental and political pressure on them.”
The organization also called on the Israeli authorities to end the solitary confinement and to release all eight detained volunteers.
