Trump Administration Halts Foreign Student Visa Applications

In a move that’s causing global concern, the Trump administration has ordered all U.S. embassies to suspend processing of student visa applications and exchange visitor visa applications until further notice.

Reuters reported the decision after viewing an internal cable on Tuesday, May 27; the news came as the country's State Department prepares to conduct social media vetting of foreign students.

The directive affects thousands of international students hoping to study in the United States and has sparked backlash from academic institutions and global education advocates alike.

The move comes as the Trump administration is working towards increasing deportations and revoking student visas, aligning with the President's hardline agenda.

The administration has already revoked Harvard University’s certification to enroll international students. They have also ordered the cancellation of federal contracts with Harvard University worth $100 million. Federal agencies are required to report their actions by June 6.

The memo was issued after the administration cancelled funding worth over $2.3 billion in federal research grants to Harvard, for which the university filed a lawsuit.
