This Is What Selfies Do to Your Nose

Do you get the feeling that you want to have plastic surgery on your face when you look at your selfies? Think about it, a recent study conducted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania showed that selfies do not show your true appearance, and they distort the size of facial features, especially the nose, as selfies often show noses longer and wider compared to traditional photographs.

It is reported that the increasing popularity of frontal smartphone images has contributed significantly to the rise in the popularity of cosmetic plastic surgery in recent years, and there is a notable link to the increase in selfies and the increase in rhinoplasty requests, especially among younger patients, where it is estimated that doctors performed more of 352,000 rhinoplasty surgeries in 2020.

In an attempt to find out the relationship between these photos and the increasing demand for cosmetic surgeries, a study was conducted that included 30 volunteers, where 3 photos were taken of them, two using the front camera of different dimensions and the third using a digital single-lens reflex camera, and all these photos were taken in the same place and lighting conditions to be compared with each other.

The results revealed significant distortions between the front smartphone images compared to the digital photo, where the nose appeared longer and the chin was shorter, which results in a significant increase in the ratio of the nose to the chin. Also, many selfies made the base of the nose appear wider in relation to the actual width of the person’s face.

Thus, we have reached a convincing conclusion that makes us think carefully before resorting to plastic surgery and takes us away from anxiety and depression. Love yourself, you are beautiful as you are.
