Sara Duterte Says Ex-President Duterte Found Unconscious in ICC Detention

Vice President Sara Duterte revealed that her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, was allegedly found unconscious inside his detention cell at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. The 80-year-old former leader reportedly had to undergo lab tests after the incident.

Sara said the family wasn’t informed of the “accident” and raised concerns about the ICC’s ability to ensure Duterte’s safety.

Lawyer Confirms Health Scare

Duterte’s lawyer, Nicholas Kaufman, said his client had suffered several falls in detention, eventually losing consciousness during one of them. He confirmed Duterte was taken for a hospital check-up for possible head injury. Kaufman also noted that the family and defense team weren’t notified in real time.

Sara Duterte Calls It “Inhumane”

Sara criticized what she described as poor medical attention, saying even her father’s basic health needs were ignored. She called his continued detention “inhumane” and urged the ICC to provide proper care and humanitarian consideration.

ICC and DFA Stay Quiet

The ICC refused to comment on Duterte’s specific case, only saying it follows international standards for detainees’ welfare. Meanwhile, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said it had no information and directed queries back to the ICC.

Context: Duterte’s ICC Trial

Rodrigo Duterte has been detained since March 12 over charges of crimes against humanity linked to his war on drugs. His confirmation of charges hearing, initially scheduled for September 23, has been postponed indefinitely after his camp claimed he was “not fit to stand trial.”
