Qatari Film Gets Selected for 2026 Tribeca Film Festival

A significant milestone for the Qatari film industry has been achieved with the selection of the short docufiction film Theatre of Dreams for the official program of the 25th edition of the Tribeca Film Festival. The festival, scheduled to run from June 3 to June 14, 2026, in New York City, will showcase the work of Qatari filmmaker Fatma Al-Ghanim alongside other international creators.

The film is set against the backdrop of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and focuses on the untold story of Qatar's first women's national football team. Through an intimate narrative, the project explores themes of courage, cultural resistance, and sacrifice. The story follows the team's captain as she reflects on the emotional toll of breaking barriers and fighting for the right to play twelve years after the events took place.

Theatre of Dreams marks the directorial debut of Fatma Al-Ghanim, who uniquely brings personal experience to the project as a former athlete and the actual captain of the team depicted in the film. Her transition from sports to storytelling was recognized globally when she received the 2025 Women's Excellence Award from World Triathlon for her contributions to advancing women's participation in sports.

The production was supported by the Qatari Film Fund, a key initiative of the Doha Film Institute dedicated to nurturing local talent. The film's inclusion in the Tribeca lineup underscores the growing international prominence of Qatari cinema and highlights the continued development of homegrown creative voices.

Al-Ghanim noted that the timing of the premiere is particularly meaningful as global attention shifts toward the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the United States. She emphasized that the film offers an intimate perspective on the sport, honoring the women who have persistently fought for inclusion in the game. The selection serves as a testament to the resilience required to pursue one's destiny despite societal expectations.
