President Trump Says He Will Remove US Sanctions from Syria

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, May 13, that he will lift the sanctions on Syria at the behest of Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

The American president announced in Riyadh during his visit to Saudi Arabia, which is part of his first foreign trip in his second term. He will also be visiting the UAE and the Qatar.

According to the White House, the US President will meet the interim Syrian President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, during his visit to Saudi Arabia. The meeting is expected to take place on Wednesday, May 14.

The US implemented the tough sanctions on Syria during the reign of Bashar al-Assad, who was removed from power in December last year.

"I will be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness," the US President said at a forum in Riyadh.
