Oman's traditional sweet, Omani halwa, is becoming viral at Japan's Expo 2025 Osaka for its fusion with the Japanese delight mochi.
The organisers of the Oman Pavilion collaborated with a Japanese mochi factory to create this delectable fusion sweet. The rice-based dessert is filled with Omani halwa.
The sweet is sold at the Pavilion's cafe alongside cookies and cakes that also contain traditional Omani ingredients. The pavilion also features fusion beverages, including the date and frankincense latte and frankincense iced tea, which have also become popular alongside the halwa mochi.
Omani Halwa
Omani halwa is a rich, fragrant dessert made from ingredients like rose water, saffron, ghee, and nuts.
This gelatinous sweet is a symbol of hospitality in Oman, often served during special occasions and celebrations. Known for its deep caramel flavor and luxurious texture, Omani halwa is a must-try treat that reflects the country’s culinary heritage.
Mochi
Mochi is a traditional Japanese rice cake made from glutinous rice that's pounded into a smooth, stretchy texture.
Often filled with sweet red bean paste, ice cream, or flavored with matcha, mochi is loved for its soft, chewy bite. Popular during the Japanese New Year and now enjoyed worldwide, mochi is a delicious blend of tradition and modern dessert culture.
The combination of these two delicious sweets has led to the creation of the Omani halwa mochi, which you must try out when visiting the Expo 2025 Osaka.
