Israel Bombs Compound Where Iranian Clerics Were Choosing New Supreme Leader

Tensions in Iran escalated further on Tuesday as Israel reportedly struck a compound belonging to the Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for naming Iran’s next Supreme Leader, according to an Israeli source cited by CNN.

Strike Hits Qom During Succession Deliberations

The attack targeted the Assembly’s compound in the holy city of Qom while members were reportedly voting to appoint a successor to the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, assassinated on Saturday.

Iranian state media said the building had been evacuated before the strike. Post-strike images show the compound heavily damaged, with smoke rising from the area.

Tehran Compound Also Targeted

This follows a Monday evening strike on the Assembly’s compound in Tehran, part of the ongoing US-Israeli military operations in Iran.

Israeli Statement

Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, said that while a full assessment is pending, the strike was aimed at the electors meeting to choose the new Supreme Leader.

He added, “There’s a very good chance that the electors will not be readily available for further meetings.”
