Hamas officials have confirmed that the group’s senior leadership survived the recent Israeli attack in Doha, Qatar. Suhail al-Hindi, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, that the targeted leaders are safe, according to Al Jazeera.
The strike specifically targeted Khalil al-Hayya, a top Hamas negotiator and head of Gaza affairs in Doha. According to al-Hindi, the attempt to kill al-Hayya and others in attendance failed.
However, the attack claimed the lives of al-Hayya’s son, Hammam, and one of his closest aides. Al-Hindi also noted that contact has been lost with three of al-Hayya’s bodyguards, raising concerns about their fate.
The meeting had reportedly been convened to discuss former U.S. President Donald Trump’s ceasefire proposal, making the timing of the attack particularly significant. Al-Hindi emphasized that despite the survival of the leadership, the loss of life remains a tragedy for the Palestinian movement.
“The blood of the leadership of the movement is like the blood of any Palestinian child,” al-Hindi said, underlining that no life lost in the conflict holds more value than another.
The survival of Hamas’s leadership underscores both the resilience of the group and Israel’s ongoing campaign to target its senior figures abroad. At the same time, the incident highlights the devastating human toll of such attacks, which continue to claim lives beyond their intended targets.
