Diljit Dosanjh's 'Amar Singh Chamkila' Nominated for the 2025 International Emmy Award

Bollywood and Punjabi cinema have reason to celebrate as Diljit Dosanjh and the biographical drama Amar Singh Chamkila receive nominations at the 53rd International Emmy Awards. The Emmy nods, announced in September, mark a significant milestone in global recognition for Indian regional storytelling.

Dosanjh is nominated in the Best Performance by an Actor category for his portrayal of the titular folk-singer Chamkila, while the series itself is in contention for Best TV Movie/Mini-Series. This marks one of Dosanjh’s first major international award recognitions, raising his profile beyond Indian audiences.

Upon learning of the nomination, Diljit expressed gratitude via social media and credited director Imtiaz Ali for the success of the project: “It’s all because of Imtiaz Ali Sir.” Parineeti Chopra, who starred opposite Diljit in the film, also joined in celebrating the milestone by posting, “Proud of my team Chamkila.”

The film Amar Singh Chamkila chronicles the life, meteoric rise, and tragic end of Punjab’s controversial musical icon. Known for his daring lyrics and boundary-pushing performances in the 1980s, Chamkila’s story is imbued with both cultural and emotional complexity. Released on Netflix in April 2024, the show has already drawn acclaim for its performances, music, and direction.

At the 2025 International Emmy Awards, Amar Singh Chamkila will stand against international titles including Germany’s Herrhausen: The Banker and the Bomb, the UK’s Lost Boys & Fairies, and Chile’s Vencer o Morir in the Best TV Movie/Mini-Series category. In the Best Actor slate, Dosanjh competes with talents such as David Mitchell for Ludwig, Oriol Pla for Yo, Adicto, and Diego Vasquez.

This dual nomination is a testament to the international reach Indian content has achieved in recent years. It also underscores a growing appetite for regionally grounded stories that resonate with universal themes of fame, identity, and mortality.

The Emmy nominations could further propel Dosanjh’s career onto the global stage, opening doors to more cross-border collaborations.
