Cardinal Robert Prevost Elected as New Pope

Cardinal Robert Prevost of the US was elected as the new Pope on Thursday, May 8, becoming the first American pontiff in history.

Cardinal Prevost is 69 years old and is from Chicago, Illinois. He will be known as Leo XIV.

White smoke emerged from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel over St Peter's Square on Thursday, around 6:30 p.m., where jubilation erupted amongst the gathered crowd.

A marching band soon appeared playing celebratory music, and they were joined by the Swiss Guard.

Gathered crowds started chanting 'Viva il Papa', which means 'Long Live the Pope' in Italian. All eyes were on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica where the 267th leader of the Catholic Church made his first public appearance.

More than 40,000 people gathered in St. Peter's Square, according to local police.

It took the cardinals only four rounds of voting to elect the new pope.

Pope Robert Prevost worked for a decade in Trujillo, Peru, and was the bishop of Chiclayo from 2014 to 2023.
