Box Office Win: Superman Flies Past $125M in U.S. Debut

There’s no stopping the Man of Steel! James Gunn’s new Superman reboot has officially smashed through projections with a massive $125 million U.S. opening weekend, soaring past its earlier $122M estimate. And internationally? It added a sturdy $95 million, bringing its global total to $220 million.

The Warner Bros. and DC Studios collaboration opened strong with $56.1 million across previews and Friday screenings, followed by $37.6 million on Saturday and a $31.3 million Sunday, holding its momentum impressively well.

Not even kryptonite could keep this hero grounded.

In fact, Gunn’s Superman is showing serious staying power heading into weekend two, with analysts predicting a modest -50% drop and a $62.5M second-weekend haul. That’s in line with other major superhero titles like The Batman (2022), which also saw a -50% dip, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Vol. 3, which dropped -56% and -48% respectively.

Still, the red-caped hero has one big challenge on the horizon: Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps, hitting theaters July 25.

Until then, Superman has little competition. Paramount’s animated Smurfs, Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot, and A24’s genre-bending Eddington are unlikely to dethrone DC’s crown jewel.

Internationally, Superman continues to perform well, although its all-American appeal has historically made it a stronger draw at home. For reference, Man of Steel’s overseas box office made up 57% of its global total, and Superman Returns saw just 49% from international audiences.

Still, at $220 million globally and climbing, Gunn’s reboot is on track for a $300 million worldwide milestone, and it's clear the world is more than ready to believe in Superman again.
