Art Basel Appoints Art Director and Reveals Theme for 2027 Edition

Art Basel has named Iraqi curator Wassan Al-Khudhairi as Artistic Director for its 2027 Qatar edition, marking a pivotal moment in the fair’s evolution as it deepens its engagement with the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia (MENASA), and beyond. The announcement coincides with the unveiling of the fair’s curatorial theme, between / بين, a concept that embraces the generative potential of liminal spaces as sites of encounter, exchange, and fluidity.

Al-Khudhairi, a globally recognized curator with deep regional expertise, will collaborate with Vincenzo de Bellis, Art Basel’s Chief Artistic Officer and Global Director of Fairs, to shape the artistic and curatorial vision for the second edition of Art Basel Qatar. The fair, presented in partnership with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and QC+, will take place from January 28 to 30, 2027, with Preview Days on January 26 and 27. Qatar Airways remains the Premium Partner for the event.

A Vision Rooted in Connection

Al-Khudhairi’s appointment underscores Art Basel Qatar’s commitment to fostering dialogue across cultures and generations. Her career, shaped by her tenure as Founding Director of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Qatar, reflects a deep understanding of the region’s artistic ecosystem. Under her leadership, Mathaf opened in 2010 and presented landmark exhibitions, including Sajjil: A Century of Modern Art and Cai Guo-Qiang’s Saraab.

The theme between / بين — which translates fluidly between Arabic and English — invites reflection on the spaces between fixed identities, geographies, and ideas. Rather than seeking resolution, the curatorial approach embraces ambiguity as a generative force, fostering connections across disciplines, generations, and cultural contexts.

Building on Success

The 2027 edition will build on the momentum of Art Basel Qatar’s inaugural year, which drew strong global response from galleries, artists, collectors, and institutions. The fair’s curated format will continue, with gallery presentations as focused solo showcases that respond directly to the theme. The event will once again be hosted across Msheireb Downtown Doha, in the Doha Design District (DDD) and M7 cultural forum.

A highlight of the 2027 edition will be the expansion of Special Projects, offering visitors immersive and experimental experiences across multiple formats. Gallery applications are now open, reflecting the fair’s commitment to supporting the region’s artistic community while strengthening ties with the international art world.

A Platform for the Region’s Future

Art Basel Qatar’s long-term mission is to nurture the region’s art ecosystem and create pathways for exchange between MENASA and the global art world. The 2027 edition will emphasize collaboration, innovation, and accessibility, ensuring that the fair remains a vital platform for artistic expression and cultural dialogue.
