I have observed this behavior in dogs over the years as the dogs sometimes change quietly as their days run out. It has no planning, it is just a gradual alteration of the way they move around throughout the day. They would not hover so much by the door, or they would be sitting in one place and not making a great fuss. These are such minor actions that they are naturally brought up and once you become aware of the pattern it is difficult to overlook the way these people feel that way and how things are slowly coming to a close.
