The Katara Cultural Village Foundation has announced the shortlist of 18 works for each of the categories in the 12th edition of the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel, marking another milestone in the prestigious literary competition since its inception in 2014.

The shortlist, presented in alphabetical order, spans five distinct categories: published novels, unpublished novels, young adult novels, historical novels, and critical studies. All nominated works are available on the prize's official website, kataranovels.com.
Unprecedented Submission Numbers
This year's competition achieved a historic benchmark, receiving 2,610 submissions—the highest number since the prize was established. This figure surpasses the previous record of 2,321 submissions received during the seventh edition in 2021, demonstrating growing engagement with Arabic literature across the region.
Geographic Distribution Across Categories
Published Novels Category
Eighteen novels representing nine Arab countries made the cut:
- Egypt: 8 works
- Algeria: 2 works
- Lebanon: 2 works
- Saudi Arabia, Syria, Sudan, Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan: 1 work each
Unpublished Novels Category
Works from novelists across ten countries reached the shortlist:
- Egypt: 4 novels
- Syria, Palestine: 3 novels each
- Algeria: 2 novels
- Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Jordan, Sudan, Morocco, Tunisia: 1 novel each
Young Adult Novels Category
Sixteen nominations came from six Arab countries, with Algeria leading the category:
- Algeria: 6 nominees
- Egypt, Morocco: 4 nominees each
- Jordan: 2 nominees
- Yemen, Tunisia: 1 nominee each
Historical Novels Category
Eighteen novels from eight nations were selected:
- Egypt: 7 novels
- Algeria: 4 novels
- Morocco: 2 novels
- Oman, Yemen, Sudan, Palestine, Tunisia: 1 novel each
Critical Studies Category
Critics from nine countries—eight Arab nations and one African nation—contributed to this category:
- Morocco: 8 studies
- Egypt: 3 studies
- Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Jordan, Palestine, Yemen, Mauritania, Guinea: 1 study each
Award Timeline
The final shortlist of nine authors across the five categories is scheduled to be published next August. Winners in all categories, including the Qatari novel category whose submitted works are currently undergoing evaluation, will be formally announced during the 12th Katara Festival of Arabic Fiction.
The prizes remain among the most generous in contemporary Arabic literature, recognizing excellence across multiple dimensions of the craft—from emerging voices in unpublished works to established writers producing historical fiction and scholarly criticism.
