The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong confirmed that a Filipina worker died in the fire that swept through several high-rise buildings in Tai Po earlier this week. The victim, far from home, had worked tirelessly to provide for her family.

Condolences and Support

“The Consulate General extends our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones at this trying time,” the PCG said. Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Administrator PY Caunan visited the family, assuring them of full support and assistance.

A Young Son’s Promise

Cacdac shared a touching note: the OFW’s 10-year-old son now wants to become a firefighter, saying he wants to prevent future tragedies. “May the soul of our dearly departed OFW, a heroine who died while caring for her employer’s five-year-old daughter, rest in God’s eternal embrace,” he added.

Filipinos in the Affected Buildings

The fire affected 23 Filipinos, while the latest reports show 128 deaths overall. According to Consul General Romulo Victor Israel Jr., 70 of the 83 registered Filipinos living in the impacted buildings have been confirmed safe.
