After a tense standoff between India and Pakistan that saw borders sealed, airspace closed, and sporting events paused, the Indian Premier League (IPL) officially returns today—and UAE cricket fans couldn’t be more relieved.
The beloved cricket tournament was temporarily suspended by the BCCI due to security concerns following the Pahalgam terror attack.
Flights were grounded, visas were revoked, and even the Pakistan Super League (PSL) shifted its remaining fixtures to the UAE. But now, post-ceasefire, the IPL is back in action from May 17 with a revised schedule and updated venues.
Dubai resident Aahil O summed up the excitement: “It’s about more than just cricket; it’s a few hours of entertainment and passion.” Though he agrees that safety must come first, he welcomed the return as a sign that “things are getting back on track.”
Sharjah-based Namita A shared that she felt “a sense of relief” when the resumption was confirmed. “I did have my doubts if they would start exactly after a week,” she said.
Some fans, like Gayathri R, also considered the mental impact on players. “The break might affect their preparation,” she said. Still, Aahil countered that professional athletes are trained to adapt to schedule changes and challenges.
For many in the UAE, cricket isn’t just a sport—it’s a shared passion. “In tough times, sport brings people together,” said Namita. Pakistani expat Zainab K (name changed) added, “Sport should ideally be a reflection of peace, not a distraction from unresolved tensions.”
As the IPL lights come back on, fans from all sides are united by a common love for the game—and a hope that peace stays on the scoreboard, too.
