H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani Champions Peace for Gaza and Sudan at Global Social Development Summit

At the opening of the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani reaffirmed the pivotal role of peace and social development in promoting global stability.

He affirmed that the State of Qatar takes pride in hosting the Summit, held three decades after the original in Copenhagen, and emphasised that collective action and cooperation are essential to confronting the economic, social and humanitarian challenges facing humanity today.

In his address, the Emir underlined how social development remains inseparable from peace and stability, declaring that the Doha Declaration aims to reinforce human dignity, equality and inclusive growth as guiding principles for the 2030 Agenda. He stressed that poverty, unemployment and social exclusion threaten social peace, and called on all countries to work together to turn lofty commitments into tangible results.

Turning to the situation in Palestine, H.H. Sheikh Tamim underscored the plight of the Palestinian people, stating the international community must intensify support for reconstruction, basic-needs supply and securing justice for the Palestinian nation amid what he described as “brutal aggression” and efforts to impose an apartheid reality.

He also addressed the crisis in Sudan, condemning the atrocities in the Darfur region and calling for a durable political solution that preserves Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He warned that ignoring war crimes and civil-conflict consequences undermines prospects of peace, stressing that Sudan’s people deserve a stable future free from violence.

By linking justice in Gaza and peace in Sudan to the broader theme of social development, the H.H. Emir articulated a vision in which humanitarian, developmental and political efforts converge. Qatar’s commitment, via entities such as the Qatar Fund for Development and Qatar Charity, to supporting vulnerable communities globally was also highlighted, reinforcing the country’s role as “an active partner in the international community.”

As the Summit advances, the Doha Declaration adopted under the H.H. Emir’s chairmanship is set to serve as the roadmap for translating global aspirations into local impact. Sheikh Tamim’s message is a reminder that multifaceted crises—from humanitarian to socio-economic to geopolitical—require integrated responses and that the world cannot separate the quest for human development from the imperative of peace.
