New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his wife, Rama Duwaji, have officially moved into Gracie Mansion, the city’s historic official mayoral residence, marking a symbolic transition from their modest Queens apartment to the 11,000-square-foot home on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
The couple left behind their rent-stabilized, one-bedroom apartment in Astoria, Queens, which was prone to flooding and lacked modern conveniences, for the stately 227-year-old Gracie Mansion on January 12, 2026, continuing an age-old tradition for New York’s mayors.
At a press event on the mansion’s lawn, Mamdani reflected on the life change, calling the move a “new chapter” while acknowledging the contrast between his former living conditions and his new residence. He also told reporters that the relocation was partly driven by security needs associated with serving as the city’s mayor.
Built in 1799 and designated as the official mayoral residence in 1942, Gracie Mansion has hosted nearly every New York mayor since. The home features historic architecture and unique elements, including a private chef’s kitchen, an ornate ballroom, and a veranda with views of the East River, strikingly different from Mamdani’s prior living situation.
While embracing the grandeur of Gracie Mansion, Mamdani also underscored his commitment to remain connected with everyday New Yorkers. He has signaled his intention to open up the residence to the public and infuse it with broader community engagement, framing the mansion as a space for all city residents rather than just official events.
In lighter remarks, Mamdani mentioned plans to install bidets in the mansion potentially and joked about adopting a cat once allergy treatments are completed, humanizing the story of his transition from a local legislator’s life in Queens to New York’s mayoral household.
Mamdani’s move to Gracie Mansion comes as part of his early tenure as the city’s mayor, during a period of active policy initiatives and public engagement that continue to shape his leadership and connection with New Yorkers.
