Rümeysa Öztürk Released from ICE Detention

A federal judge in Vermont ordered the immediate release of the Tufts University doctoral student Rümeysa Öztürk on Friday, May 9.

She was detained by federal immigration officers near her home in Massachusetts on March 25.

Öztürk was detained after co-authoring a campus newspaper op-ed a year ago, which criticized Tufts University's response to the war in Gaza.

The doctoral student spent the last six weeks in a Louisiana immigration detention center. Her arrest was part of a series of arrests of students who had participated in pro-Palestinian protests across campuses in the US.

The Trump administration accused Öztürk of participating in activities supporting Hamas.
