Palestine Action Claims 200 Arrested Supporters Have Not Been Charged

Campaigners from Defend Our Juries have reported that none of the 200 demonstrators arrested in recent weeks for expressing support for the proscribed group Palestine Action have been formally charged.

This claim surfaced ahead of a planned protest in central London, where hundreds are expected to show their solidarity with the banned organisation.

Palestine Action was outlawed in July under the Terrorism Act 2000, following claims that its activists were responsible for millions of pounds in damage at an RAF base. The proscription makes membership of—or support for—the group a criminal offence, punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

Tim Crosland, spokesperson for Defend Our Juries, suggested that no charges have been filed yet due to the impending High Court judicial review of the proscription, scheduled for November. He indicated that legal action against the demonstrators may be delayed until after the court’s decision.

Despite the lack of charges, organizers say over 500 people have committed to hold "I Support Palestine Action" signs at a protest in central London on Saturday, challenging the legality and suppressive consequence of the ban.

The situation raises pressing questions about the enforcement of terrorism legislation and its impact on civil liberties, given the absence of formal charges against large numbers of peaceful protesters.
