The 17-year-old social media star's death has shocked the nation, with people calling for increased safety for female content creators.
How was Sana Yousuf Killed?
On Monday evening, Yousuf was home with her aunt, and according to the latter's witness account, a man entered the house with a pistol. He briefly conversed with Yousuf before she reportedly told him, "Go away from here. There are cameras all around. I will fetch you some water.”
Only moments after this, the individual shot her in the chest two times, after which he fled the scene.
Sana was rushed to the hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries. The incident happened when both her parents were not at home, and her brother was away in their hometown, Chitral.
Investigation and Arrest of Suspect
The family filed an FIR in the same evening at the Sumbal Police Station under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
Within 20 hours of the murder, the 22-year-old suspect was arrested, who was the TikToker Umar Hayat. He was known as an acquaintance of the victim and was tracked through CCTV footage and mobile data.
The footage showed Hayat leaving the house and typing on his phone before he escaped the city via the highway.
After the killing, Hayat fled Islamabad, but he was arrested in Faisalabad and confessed to killing Yousuf during the police interrogation. The police recovered the murder weapon, his clothes from the crime, and Sana's phone.
The motive behind the killing was not revealed and remains under investigation, but initial evidence suggests that there was a connection between Yousuf and Hayat.
Sana Yousuf: A Rising Social Media Star
Sana Yousuf was a influencer who has half a million followers on Instagram and almost 800,000 followers on TikTok. Her mother is a local activist and her father is a government officer.
