ABC has suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely following controversial remarks made by host Jimmy Kimmel about the reaction to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The decision came after several ABC-affiliated broadcast stations refused to air the show, citing the host’s comments as “offensive and insensitive.”
In his monologues earlier in the week, Kimmel accused the “MAGA gang” of attempting to deflect blame by characterizing the shooter, Tyler Robinson, as not one of them, while also alleging that many are trying to gain political advantage from Kirk’s death.
These comments drew immediate criticism, especially given that law enforcement and family statements have contradicted Kimmel’s suggestion that the killer was a pro-Trump Republican.
Among the broadcasters reacting, Nexstar Communications Group, which operates dozens of ABC affiliates, announced that it would pull the show from its stations. Nexstar called the remarks a violation of community standards during a period of national sensitivity.
Regulatory pressure also played a major role in the suspension. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr condemned Kimmel’s comments as misleading and suggested there could be regulatory consequences for ABC and its parent company, Disney, which is seeking approval for other major ventures.
President Donald Trump and other political figures praised the suspension, framing it as a corrective measure, while critics and free speech advocates warned that the move sets a dangerous precedent for media censorship and political interference.
At this time, ABC has not announced when—or indeed whether—the show will return, and Jimmy Kimmel has not issued a public statement responding to the network’s action.
