Greta Thunberg Arrested in the UK During Pro-Palestinian Protests

Swedish climate and human rights activist Greta Thunberg, 22, was arrested by British police in central London on Tuesday, 23 December, 2025 while taking part in a pro-Palestinian demonstration supporting hunger-striking activists and prisoners affiliated with Palestine Action, a group that the UK government has designated as a terrorist organisation.

The Prisoners for Palestine protest took place in the City of London’s financial district outside the offices of Aspen Insurance, which campaigners say provides services to the UK arm of Israeli defence contractor Elbit Systems — a claim the insurer has not publicly addressed. Thunberg was seen holding a placard reading “I support the Palestine Action prisoners. I oppose genocide,” an act that led to her being detained under the UK Terrorism Act for supporting a proscribed organisation.

City of London Police confirmed that, in addition to Thunberg, two other activists were arrested earlier in the demonstration on suspicion of criminal damage after spraying red paint on the building’s exterior. A police spokesperson said a 22-year-old woman was also arrested for displaying a placard in support of the banned group, in breach of Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000

Thunberg’s arrest marks one of the most high-profile detentions linked to pro-Palestinian protests in the UK since the government’s proscription of Palestine Action, which has intensified legal scrutiny of demonstrations and public displays of support for the group. Hundreds of people have been detained this year at protests where participants carried signs or engaged in acts of civil disobedience related to the Palestine Action cause.

The Swedish activist, first rising to global prominence through climate strikes beginning in 2018, has in recent years increasingly engaged in broader human rights and pro-Palestinian activism, including prior detentions in Europe and participation in flotilla efforts aimed at challenging the blockade of Gaza.
