World Renowned Italian Designer Giorgio Armani Passes Away at 91
Giorgio Armani, Icon of Italian Elegance and Design, Dies at 91
The fashion world is mourning the loss of Giorgio Armani, the pioneering Italian designer who passed away on Thursday, 4 September, at the age of 91.
His company, Armani Group, announced that he died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, marking the end of an era for modern fashion.
Armani built his eponymous brand in 1975, starting from scratch and growing it into a global luxury empire that spanned haute couture, ready-to-wear, fragrances, home furnishings, and hospitality.
His designs—most notably his soft, deconstructed jackets—redefined menswear and symbolized a new era of relaxed elegance that reshaped the fashion landscape of the 1980s and beyond.
Known affectionately in the industry as "Re Giorgio" (King Giorgio), Armani was both creative visionary and savvy entrepreneur. He maintained tight control over his brand and continued serving as its CEO and creative director until his final days. Despite health challenges that led him to miss several recent fashion shows, Armani remained dedicated to his work and projects up until the end.
Diplomatic tributes poured in quickly. Donatella Versace, among his peers, reacted emotionally, while Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised him for elevating Italian fashion on the global stage, hailing his creativity, elegance, and enduring influence.
Armani’s passing comes just weeks before the planned 50th anniversary celebration of his fashion house during Milan Fashion Week, a poignant milestone for the brand and his legacy.
Known for his discretion and preference for privacy, Armani’s regret late in life was spending too much time working and too little with friends and family—a sentiment he shared in a final interview just days before his passing.
By the time of his passing, his personal fortune was estimated in the multibillion-dollar range, and his estate is expected to go to close collaborators and family members.
Plans for public mourning are already unfolding. A funeral chamber will be open in Milan's Teatro Armani over the weekend of 6–7 September, followed by a private funeral—respecting Armani’s wishes for a restrained and intimate farewell.
