Big changes are coming to WhatsApp Business—and if you use the platform to connect with customers, listen up. Meta just announced that, starting July 1, the business version of the world’s most popular messaging app will charge per message instead of per conversation.
The goal? “To simplify our pricing and align to industry standard-pricing for messaging,” according to WhatsApp.
So, what does that mean for businesses? It’s all about paying for what you actually send—no more flat conversation rates.
💬 One Message = One Charge
Under the new model, every message you send as a business will count toward your bill. This is a big shift for businesses that rely heavily on WhatsApp to chat with customers, especially those sending lots of short follow-ups or quick replies.
But there’s a silver lining…
🆓 Free Utility Replies & Tiered Discounts
WhatsApp also announced that utility template messages sent in response to a customer’s message will now be free. That means if a customer reaches out first, your business can reply with certain templates without getting charged—giving brands more flexibility in how they engage.
Even better: WhatsApp is rolling out volume-based pricing tiers for utility and authentication messages. Translation? The more messages your business sends, the more discounts you could unlock automatically.
And to keep things fair, utility and authentication rates will be updated across multiple regions to keep WhatsApp pricing competitive with other communication tools.
Whether you're running a small biz or a major enterprise, these changes are designed to push smarter, more targeted messaging—and reward those scaling fast. Just don’t forget to update your strategy before July hits.
