Veteran Checo returns: Sergio Pérez set for F1 comeback with Cadillac as the American outfit enters the grid in 2026.

Sergio "Checo" Pérez is on the cusp of returning to Formula 1 in a major move that’s drawing significant attention.

Having spent the 2025 season sidelined after Red Bull terminated his contract early, the Mexican driver is now reportedly set to join the brand-new Cadillac F1 team for its inaugural 2026 campaign.

As confirmed by multiple outlets, Pérez has reportedly reached an agreement with Cadillac—General Motors’ new entry into Formula 1—positioning him as a leading candidate for one of their two driver seats. The official announcement is expected to drop around the Italian Grand Prix in Monza.

Cadillac’s entry into F1 comes amid sweeping regulation changes slated for 2026. The team will debut using Ferrari power units, making them the 11th constructor on the grid and the first new team since Haas in 2016.

Several factors make Pérez a fitting choice: his track record, including six Grand Prix wins, and his value both on and off the track, with strong commercial backing and sponsorship appeal, especially in Mexico.

Cadillac is reportedly exploring options for Pérez’s teammate, with names like Valtteri Bottas and rising talents such as Felipe Drugovich, Jak Crawford, and Alex Dunne in the mix.

Pérez’s desire to return to F1 is driven by both passion and purpose. Backed by a new manager, he has made clear that he will only return if the opportunity is meaningful and energizing, and Cadillac appears to be that project.

His former teammate Max Verstappen also publicly supported his comeback, calling him “a very good choice, especially for a new team.”

The potential return marks a full-circle moment for the 35-year-old, who debuted in F1 in 2011 and competed at the highest level through 2024. His experience could prove invaluable to a rookie team like Cadillac as it navigates its debut season in a rapidly evolving competitive environment
