Over the last few decades the earth's rotation has been slowing slightly, and scientists have had to add extra seconds to our clocks periodically. Recently, however, that planetary trend has reversed itself and the Earth has begun spinning faster than it has in half a century. The fast-spinning turns new challenges for the organizations keeping time around the globe. If things aren't going to stop, metrologists will have to take time away for the first time in human history.
