Doha Named the GCC Tourism Capital of 2026
Doha Officially Named GCC Tourism Capital for 2026, Cementing Its Role as a Regional Travel Leader
Doha has been officially designated the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Tourism Capital for 2026, following approval by tourism ministers from across the GCC member states, a recognition that highlights Qatar’s rising prominence as a global and regional tourism destination.
The designation comes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen tourism cooperation within the GCC and spotlight Doha’s strategic investments in world-class infrastructure, diversified visitor experiences and long-term tourism development.
The selection of Doha followed a comprehensive bid by Qatar Tourism, which showcased the city’s balanced approach to cultural authenticity, urban innovation and quality of life — aligning with national priorities for economic diversification and sustainable tourism growth.
His Excellency Saad bin Ali Al-Kharji, Chairman of Qatar Tourism and Chair of the Board of Directors of Visit Qatar, said the recognition reflects the success of Qatar’s strategic vision to make tourism a central pillar of its National Development Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030, underlining an integrated and competitive tourism ecosystem.
Doha’s designation was supported by key strengths, including advanced transport infrastructure such as Hamad International Airport, widely recognised for operational excellence, and Qatar Airways’ expansive global network linking Doha to more than 170 destinations worldwide. The city’s integrated metro and tram systems also help ensure seamless mobility for visitors exploring the region.
The tourism proposition is further enhanced by flexible visa policies, investor-friendly business environments and global promotional campaigns that have elevated Qatar’s profile on the international travel map.
In its announcement, Qatar’s bid outlined Doha’s capacity to offer varied tourism experiences, supported by robust infrastructure for hosting major events, business conferences and large-scale cultural attractions. The city’s calendar of activities — from sporting events to arts and entertainment festivals — plays a significant role in attracting visitors year-round.
Doha’s commitment to sustainability, heritage preservation, eco-tourism development and expanding offerings in medical and wellness tourism were also noted as differentiators that strengthen its appeal as a multifaceted destination.
Qatar Tourism and Visit Qatar will soon unveil further details about the GCC Tourism Capital 2026 programme, including joint initiatives with Gulf partners, promotional campaigns and a year-round programme of cultural, community and entertainment events aimed at generating sustainable economic and tourism impact.
The recognition of Doha as the GCC Tourism Capital for 2026 is a milestone in Qatar’s tourism journey, reinforcing its growing reputation as a leading destination for leisure, culture, business and global connectivity within the Gulf and around the world.
